Currently, around fifty academics at French universities and Grandes Écoles, including DAAD funded German assistant professors, teach German language, literature and regional studies. They are mostly integrated within German language and literature departments, but they also teach courses in LEA degree programmes ("Langues Étrangères Appliquées/Applied languages and literature), and are also available for students of other subjects and students and teachers from other faculties. This is the right place to obtain information on preparing for the German exam, the results of which must be included in the application documents for a DAAD scholarship. And last but not least, the staff provide information on courses of study and scholarships for French students, support the implementation of bilateral exchange projects and organise study tours.

The DAAD Lektor programme in France

Since it was re-establishment in 1950, the DAAD has been placing lecturers – primarily in German Language and Literature and German as a Foreign Language – at higher education institutions in over 110 countries around the world to take on teaching and cultural-political responsibilities. The DAAD Lektors are mediators of a cultural policy abroad that is geared toward communication and exchange. They are contact persons for questions regarding academic studies in Germany, and experts on academic cooperation with German higher education institutions.
Currently, there are about 35 Lektors and 10 Specialist Lektors working in France. These latter teach Germany-related topics in specific disciplines like law, history, humanities and economics, translation, and didactics. As a rule, DAAD Lektors are academic professionals from Germany, who are employed at a French higher education institution for a period of four to five years. The Lektors are chosen in close cooperation between the DAAD and the respective higher education institution by means of a German-French commission following a highly selective procedure.
The higher education institution provides the Lektors with an appropriate position and remuneration, and works with the DAAD to define the Lektor’s responsibilities as well as the necessary qualifications. The DAAD looks for suitable candidates and suggests them to the higher education institution. The Lektors thus have an employment relationship with the host institution and are members of its teaching staff. Apart from its role as intermediary, the DAAD also assumes a promoting and supporting function by preparing the Lektors for their responsibilities, offering regular training, and providing financial support. The necessary funding is made available to the DAAD by the Federal Foreign Office.

Responsibilities of a Lektor

The DAAD Lektor programme is one of the DAAD’s largest and most established support programmes, and has earned a sterling reputation over the decades. With their excellent training and teaching experience, DAAD Lektors are offering an up-to-date and attractive range of courses at higher education institutions around the world. In addition to their teaching in the fields of German Language and Literature and German as a Foreign Language and the above mentioned departments, Lektors also engage in cultural-political tasks and programme work. At many locations, they work closely with the partner institutions and organise their own cultural projects.
Their activity profile also encompasses general guidance on the study location Germany as well as individual student and scholarship advice. Another core responsibility is preparation for German language exams and administering the language placement test onSET. The lectureships are limited to four to five years in order to keep the courses current and relevant at all times.

Activity profiles

Depending on the focus of the lectureship, the following three activity profiles can be differentiated:

  1. Focus teaching (regular lectureship): This lectureship encompasses in particular German language teaching as well as Germany-related focus topics in the fields of literature, culture, social and regional studies.
  2. Focus special discipline (specialist lectureship): This lectureship includes primarily teaching Germany-related topics in specific disciplines such as law, history, humanities and economics, translation, and didactics.
  3. Focus programme coordination: In addition to the above named responsibilities, this lectureship includes work at one of the DAAD’s branch offices, the coordination of the Lektor programme, and organising seminars for Lektors in the respective country.
